Iron studies, also known as iron profile or iron panel, are a group of blood tests that provide crucial information about a person’s iron levels and iron-related parameters. These tests typically include measurements of serum iron, total iron-binding capacity (TIBC), transferrin saturation, and serum ferritin. Serum iron levels indicate the amount of iron circulating in the blood, while TIBC measures the capacity of proteins to bind iron. Transferrin saturation calculates the percentage of iron saturation in transferrin, an iron transport protein. Serum ferritin reflects the body’s iron stores. Iron studies are essential in diagnosing and monitoring conditions such as iron-deficiency anemia, hemochromatosis (iron overload), and other disorders affecting iron metabolism. These tests help healthcare professionals make informed decisions regarding iron supplementation, dietary recommendations, and the management of iron-related health issues.
